Ok – this is funny for about a split second. The idea of offering employees the opportunity to resign in order to collect a severance package and grease the wheels of a layoff isn’t a new concept. Some firmly believe it is a very dignified way to go about it. That being said, offering factory workers a cell-phone to entice them to resign is a different story. Yet, this is exactly what Microsoft is doing in Beijing.
Thousands of Chinese factory workers have been offered a free Nokia Lumia 630 Windows Phone if they apply for a volunteer resignation package. The software maker is cutting around 4,700 jobs at a former Nokia handset factory, but the plans have generated protests recently. As a result, Microsoft is trying to tempt workers to resign on a “first come, first serve” basis with an offer of the Lumia 630. The same employees work in the factory helping manufacture Nokia handsets. Oh the irony.
MarketWatch reports that the offer was emailed to employees, noting that up to 300 workers per day are eligible for the free Lumia 630. It’s quite rare for employees to be offered a product they’re helping create in factories to entice a resignation – unheard of really.
