Updated: Samsung has officially acknowledged the issue and is encouraging users to take them in the source of purchase or contact Samsung directly for a hardware replacement. How about an explanation Sammy?

Samsung’s next big thing has a big problem with a central feature of the phone, enough so that Verizon has taken active steps to address it. The error, simply described as “Warning: Camera Failed” freezes the camera app on launch and requires a reboot of the phone. The reaction: Not OK, NOT OK. Galaxy S5 owners that encounter the issue are being advised to contact their carrier support for assistance.
Verizon has taken to Twitter (@VZWnews) with the following message: “Galaxy S5 customers who see “Warning: Camera Failed” please contact @VZWsupport & we’ll work to resolve it, including replacing the device.” If carriers like Sprint and Verizon are replacing these devices outright, we could be looking at a defect large enough to have effected a sizable batch. It’s definitely not systemic, but large enough to make me take pause considering the cause. It’s not like anyone’s talking about a patch coming out to address it…
